Kolam
Kolam can be pointed out as one of the most important folk dramas in Sri Lanka. This is associated with the low country dance tradition. This was prevalent in the coastal villages of the Southern Province. Among them are Ambalangoda, Benthara, Matara and Mirissa.
The play is about fertility, village to country blessings and entertainment. The play is aimed at generating humor and social reform. The play was originally presented to appease the queen of the Great Standard King.
Anabera, Hewa, Jasa, Lenchina, Mudali, Nonchi and Arachchi are the main characters in the play. The specialty here is wearing a mask and dancing. And every character here, including the female characters, is played by men. That too is a specialty that comes here.
The place where the Kolam play is presented is called "Thanayampola". Most of the time, the finished threshing floor is used for this purpose. The low country drum is played for the kolam play. The dances are performed according to the drum beats of the low country tradition.
This shows the behavior of ordinary people....✊πΎ️
